“Reflections on Sails & Beauty” is a homage to a particularly fascinating era in yachting history, which I was able to document for over 40 years. Topics ranging from the development of the yacht, to design and boat building, cruising and racing, to individual boat classes and statements about motivations and enjoyment, provide a very comprehensive portrait of the yacht world through tracing the stories around the film series I have produced. “Joy & Beauty”, as the Finn Esko Kilpi put it, beauty, joy and enthusiasm are the fundamental perspective of the films and accordingly also the quintessence of the book. The aesthetics of the yachts, the themes of the films and their flair, the enthusiasm of the sailors, designers and boat builders come together in a kind of “logbook”, starting with the spectacular renaissance of classic yachts at the beginning of the 1980s, to the so-called superyachts early 2000s. The logbook details the stories of and around the films “La Nioulargue” through to “Tracks of Borkumriff IV”, with large-format photos, statements, descriptions of individual personalities and personal memories.

Not only had the so-called “Golden Age” been resurrected against all expectations, we had actually been “beyond it” for some time, as was the title of a film of mine based on sequences from the America’s Cup Jubilee 2001 In Cowes, and we were lucky enough to be there to experience and document. The focus is on cultural assets of the first order, “functional arts”, art that one can not only admire but even use, as the American Lance Lee put it. The book as a homage, as a thank you for a great time.

„Reflections on Sails & Beauty“ ist eine Homage an eine besonders faszinierende Epoche der Yachtgeschichte, die ich über 40 Jahre dokumentieren durfte. Themen von der Entwicklung der Yacht, über Design und Bootsbau, Cruising und Racing, bis hin zu einzelnen Bootsklassen und Aussagen über Motivationen und Freude daran, liefern mit der entstandenen Filmreihe ein sehr umfassendes Portrait der Yachtwelt. „Joy & Beauty“, wie der Finne Esko Kilpi es ausdrückte, Schönheit, Freude und Begeisterung sind der grundlegende Blickwinkel der Filme und entsprechend auch die Quintessenz des Buches. Die Ästhetik der Yachten, die Themen der Filme und ihr Flair, die Begeisterung der Segler, Designer und Bootsbauer kommen in diesem ersten Teil in einer Art „Logbuch“, von der spektakulären Renaissance der klassischen Yachten mit Beginn der 1980er bis zu den sogenannten Superyachten der frühen 2000er über grossformatige Photos, über Statements, Beschreibungen einzelner Persönlichkeiten und über persönliche Erinnerungen zum Ausdruck.

Das sogenannte „Golden Age“ war nicht nur gegen alle Erwartungen wieder auferstanden, wir waren seit geraumer Zeit sogar „beyond it“, wie auch ein Filmtitel von mir bezüglich Sequenzen des America’s Cup Jubilee 2001 In Cowes lautete, und wir hatten das Glück, es zu erleben und dokumentieren zu können. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Kulturgüter ersten Ranges, „functional arts“, Kunst, die man nicht nur bewundern, sondern sogar benutzen kann, wie es der Amerikaner Lance Lee ausdrückte. Das Buch als Homage, als ein Dank an eine großartige Zeit.
